EXPLOSION#17 HAPPY NEW YEAR
Happy New Year is the 17th episode of Explosion, a project developed by Loredana Longo, an artist from Catania.
In the past years Loredana Longo has been working on “destruction” in a very peculiar way defined by her as “aesthetics of destruction”: it is a romantic view of the meaning of the word (meant as fascination for topics related to death). Each individual episode of the Explosion project consists of three fundamental points: construction of the scene, explosion of the scene, reconstruction of the scene. Usually an explosion is unexpected, violent and inevitably leads to the destruction of something. The scenes of the performance are simple and represent the usual premises of our every day’s life (a sort of domestic and family attack); it is as if something would suddenly destroy the normality of our daily actions.
In the artist’s opinion destruction represents, from the conceptual point of view, a tool for reconstruction, the attempt to bring to life something that has been abused. However reconstruction implies memory of destruction: «There is nothing nice in destruction - Loredana Longo maintains – but, given the quantity of images we are confronted with and our indifference to them we can easily conclude that our tolerance threshold has substantially modified, we might even re-write a new aesthetical vocabulary».
Loredana Longo was born in 1967 in Catania. After graduating in Foreign Languages in 1985, she attended the Istituto Europeo di Design of Milan and graduated in Painting at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Catania. She was granted a scholarship within the framework of Erasmus project in Barcelona. Her work mostly consists of videos/installations, performances and photography but she also works in the design field, co-operating with companies based abroad.
Her main exhibitions include: Explosion#14 honeymoon (Festival Fies Drodesera, Trento; Prometeogallery di Ida Pisani, Milan), Thanksgiving day (Festival Oltrarno Atelier, Cantieri Goldonetta, Florence), Explosion#10 Christmas evening (Wilfried Von Gunten Projektraum, Thun, Switzerland), Explosion#8 sweets (Gallery of Contemporary Art FrancescoPantaleone, Palermo), Double1#2 (Museum Van Nagsael, Rotterdam), Sullamiapelle (Gallery of Conteporary Art, Catania). She also participated in exhibitions in Shanghai, Peking, Prague, Madrid, Bourges, Berlin, Thuringen, Athens, Tokio.
