Born in Venice in 1963, Tiziano Scarpa dedicated his writing to several genres. He is the author of novels, collections of poems and aphorisms, theatrical texts, radio dramas, a book of critical papers, a small opera book, lyrics for songs, translations, a tourist guide (of Venice), and stories for comic books. He also went on stage as a verbal performer accompanied by musicians such as the Banda Osiris, Enrico Rava, Massimo Giacon, Stefano Bollani, and Massimo Donà. In an interview (Il linguaggio come tormenta, sciabordio, tempesta) he affirms, «Surely in that which I have written so far, there is a torment, a lapping, a storm of languages; I don’t see how it could be different, rather, it’s almost trite to do a type of research in this sense now. I would say that it is almost more experimental to be classic, monotonous, monotone and dull in these years, seeing as how this is how one truly goes against the tide. Instead I, much more trivially, have let myself be carried by the vortex of the multiplicity of lingoes. Beyond this, I believe, that besides the words, it means that jargon variety signifies an interrogation of the plurality of knowledge. One of my real maestros is Alberto Savinio, the brother of De Chirico, who died in the 1950’s, and who, for example in the Nuova enciclopedia gathered truly important words, and words apparently less important, words such as love, Europe, god, joined by parts such as abat-jour, mosquito repellent coil… To interrogate all knowledge, to convoke it and as a consequence then pour them back into multiple lingoes. This to me makes sense». Among his works are noted the novels Occhi sulla graticola (1996) and Kamikaze d’occidente (2003) and the collection of stories Amore® (1998), Cosa voglio da te (2003) and Amami (2007); the poem Groppi d’amore nella scuraglia (2005) and, with Aldo Nove and Raul Montanari, the collection of poems Nelle galassie oggi come oggi. Covers (2001); the radio dramas Pop corn (1997) and La visita (2006); the theatrical texts Nel laboratorio di Lady Frankenstein (2002), Comuni mortali (2005), Gli straccioni (2005), Il professor Manganelli e l’ingegner Gadda (2005), La custode (2006), L’ultima casa (2007); the book of critical papers Cos’è questo fracasso? (2000), the guide Venezia è un pesce (2000) and the collection of aphorisms Corpo (2004).
