Drawn from Eduardo Scarpetta’s life, Qui rido io puts on the stage the theatre itself that was the life and world of one of the foundation fathers of the Neapolitan theatre.
After Santarella memorable success, that drew the whole city to the Teatro Sannazaro, Scarpetta decided to have a villa built on the Vomero hill, named “Villa Santarella”, where he used to go and relax, as suggested by the inscription “Qui Rido Io (I laugh Here)” on the façade of the villa.
The performance put on by Sollazzo draws its suggestions and hints from Scarpetta’ autobiographies to talk about the tics of our time, following the Neapolitan satirical tradition (including Petito and Scarpetta himself). Old wisdom and mood of the present time are nicely combined by Peppe Barra, an actor capable of combining the traditional reportoire of jokes and jests with the inventions of the art and the artist’s peculiarity. The main character of the pièce is an actor sought-after by the impresario - who absolutely wants to participate in the International Festival of the Theatre with a social-oriented performance - and by an influential critic who wants a comedy - played by inmates only - on the life of Felice Sciosciammocca’s inventor.
Giuseppe Sollazzo was born in Naples in 1957. His first experience as director was in 1977 when he set up Zingari by Raffaele Viviani with a university group. From 1978 to 1982 he was in Bologna where he studied with Luigi Squarzina and Giuliano Scabia. In Naples he worked first as actor and then as prompter, in the last companies of the “sceneggiate”. From 1983 to 1997 he was assistant to Roberto de Simone, with whom he co-operated for the setting up of a number of performances including: Eden Teatro, La Lucilla Costante, La dama del bell’umore, il malato per apprensione, Dedicato a Maria, Il Drago, Histoire du Soldat. From 1985 to 1989 he worked as theatrical critic for the newspaper “Il Mattino”. Since 1990 he has been working on scene writing and direction. He wrote down and put on various performances: I draghi nel cortile freely drawn from Lo scherzo by Kundera; 1938 a pièce on racial laws; Senza trombe né tamburi, a silent play with no cues. He also directed the following performances: La Dispute by Marivaux; La panne by Durrenmatt, Ifigenia in Aulide by Euripide, Il Medico dei Pazzi by Eduardo Scarpetta, Il sangue by Sergi Belbel; Piedigrotta Taranto. He is professor of Stage Arts at the Conservatory of Cagliari.
