Under the artistic direction of Kitty Hartl, appear five women, Kitten on the Keys, Dirty Martini, Julie Atlas Mus, Mimi le Meaux, Harvest Moon, and a man, Roky Roulette, to whom is added the figure of a voyeur, who leads the play in the game.

Burlesque, descendant of vaudeville from the second half of the 1800s, is a kind of parodist show born in a Victorian England and later imported to the United States: making fun of the world, the habits, the pastimes of aristocracy and the industrial rich, in order to entertain the less well-to-do classes. There is a theme, ever faint, to the songs, the dance numbers and much comedy. The genre became very popular, and between the 40s and 50s, a few Burlesque stars such as Sally Rand, famous for her “bubble dance” and Tempest Storm, star of Russ Meyer’s and Irving Klaw’s films, became downright divas. In the 90s, on the wave of fashion tied to vintage culture, neo-burlesque was born: the ironic characteristics are accentuated, but no longer turned to a social environment; instead, it ended up being completely self-referential: starting out with music (sometimes with songs from the past), passing to the hairstyles (very teased and coloured wigs) to then arrive at the costumes and accessories.

The New Burlesque is characterised by humour and sensuality and presents a succession of extravagant numbers; contrary to the strip-tease, transform sensuality into comedy and offers a parody of that same femininity: it is before everything else an “attitude of opposition” to established norms, to conventions and socially predetermined feminine icons. Each performer has built a character through the choice of name, a costume, choreography: sings, dance and undresses with irony. Their bodies are not those of anorexic models of fashion magazines, but have generous forms of Boterian memory.

Kitty Hartl takes care, since 2000, the music and live shows for Le Lieu Unique a Nantes, and in 2006 worked for “Nuit Blanche” in Paris. Ever in search of emerging and amazing artists, in 2004 he discovered the New Burlesque genre at a convention in Los Angeles: there he chose five women and created the show The New Burlesque for I.D.E.A.L. 05 (Irresistible Dirty Extra Action Lovers). This show achieved a notable support both public and critical, and was taken on tour in numerous French cities. For the first biennale of contemporary art “Estuaire” (2007, Nantes), Kitty Hartl organized a staging of The New Burlesque for 3 months, with great success.
